Default Web Site configuration errors

I am not an IT guy and I try to manage Windows Server 2008 R2 with IIS 7.5 tools to start a web site. I need any help you can to a novice. This started with the following error when I click "Explore" then the Config element: Error Summary HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. Detailed Error Information Module IIS Web Core Notification Unknown Handler Not yet determined Error Code 0x8007000d Config Error Configuration file '\\?\C:\inetpub\wwwroot\web.config' does not contain a root tag Config File \\?\C:\inetpub\wwwroot\web.config Requested URL http://localhost:80/ Physical Path Logon Method Not yet determined Logon User Not yet determined I researched for solutions and I was unable to find and delete a defective XML element that is mentioned in a thread. Then I unactivated IIS 7.5 and reinstalled it hoping the "Default Web Site" would be reconfigurated automatically with the error being corrected. I was wrong. Now these are the error messages I receive: On the Configuration Editor: "There was an error while performing this operation Details: Filename: \\?\C:\inetpub\wwwroot\web.config Line number:2 Error: Configuration file is not well-formed XML" When I click on the action "Explore", I get the following error: "The system cannot find the file specified". I really have no clue to get out of this mess in order to get the "Default Web Site" working with its logo being visible on the browser. Can anyone help me please?
